» downsizing

They gathered us together, huddled over speakerphones across San Francisco and New York to tell us the news.

The lay-offs are hitting here too. As if we didn't see it coming a mile away.

I've been laid-off before. Losing health insurance is the worst thing.

The funny thing is that I was planning to quit anyway. True, I had hoped to stay a while longer, but this is good. I'm forced out, can't procrastinate.

Of course, it will be two weeks before anyone knows exactly who walks and who stays. Same old story, only this time I really don't care that much.

This is the best part...the atmosphere in the office. Everyone trying to act like it's cool, like what's good for the company is good for them, staying loyal until the ax hits the blood-soaked block.

Silly. It's all for profit. People want profit. Companies want profit. Nobody is content to just earn what they need to live, maybe keep a little in the bank for emergencies. Everyone wants to make more next year than they made this year. How could anyone expect that to work?

America...blinded by its own greed.

Oh well, I start my PreCalculus course tonight at the Berkeley Extension. How satisfiying will that be? Learning something new on the same day that my old life begins to fall apart.
