» unbreakable Tonight I went with LMJ to see "Unbreakable." I was not expecting much. I'd read some pretty scathing reviews. Someone wrote that the audience at their theater had yelled out "LAME!" at the surprise ending. I figured I was burning $9 (yes, movies cost $9 in SF now...crazy). After all, I wasn't a big fan of "Sixth Sense." About halfway through the movie I was won over. I braced myself for a lame or annoying ending, but instead found myself absolutely thrilled. I really enjoyed it. Quite a lot actually. I can see why some people wouldn't like it. Anyone out for a mindless action/superhero flick would be dissapointed. Anyone not willing to go with the story and see that it is a metaphor for life, rather than real life, we are seeing depiced on the screen will turn their noses up. I was never a fan of comics. I've never bought a comic book in my life, unless you count "Calvin and Hobbes" or "Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth." But this movie prepares its audience to see the story throught the same filters we have to use to understand the action comic. It worked. Finally, a movie about how we, as 'normal' people, are effected by the black & white struggle between good and evil depicted in those little flimsy books. To my mind this movie brought the satisfaction of watching the real world juxtaposed with the fantasy that almost all of us scoff a but are secretly drawn to. This isn't a movie about good guy vs. villain. This movie is about applying all we have learned from our culture of story-telling to the human struggle for self-awareness. It is about the sadness of not knowing what to do or how to proceed. Of course, what do I know? I'm not feeling terribly eloquent right now, although I left the theater feeling energized and ready to write an essay. That was 2 hours and a train ride ago. But I'm sure glad that one movie this year didn't suck.
