» think too much

Holy cats! I've not entered an entry for three days?!

Well, things have been disgustingly busy at work this week. All of the company's Websites are relaunching in a unified look-and-feel today/tomorrow, so most of us have been staying late and working weekends.

I slept, ate sweet potatoes and read about D. W. Griffith most of the day. Then MJ called to see if I was up for Fight Club in San Fran. I was.

Fight Club is good. I recommend it. Even more important and interesting than American Beauty. I certainly liked the writing and character development more.

The movie put me in a pensive mood, and by the time I got back to Berkeley (by train) and wandered home (stopping in at a coffee shop for a slice of pie and an Italian soda) I had managed to turn a number of ideas over in my head.

This is the thought that solidified most clearly: Thanks to television, radio and the mass media in general, we have grown up surrounded by only the best representations of human endeavor. A hundred years ago a person only heard exellent symphonies or saw masterworks of art if that person lived in the vacinity of these things. We are now accustomed to having the best presented to us. The greatest musicians, the best actors, the finest directing, the most skillful athleticism, the most ingenious narratives...

We've become very spoiled. As a result we sit through a masterpiece like Citizen Kane and fail to see what is so special about it. We listen to Yo Yo Ma and are not amazed at his skill; we expect it.

I guess that this is actually a good thing for us as a species. But we need to keep things in perspective all the same.

Hmmm... what a boring entry.
